“Law of Attraction? Affirmations? Vision Boards?
WHAAAT??”
“You mean I’m supposed to believe that just having positive thoughts and intentions can make shit happen? That’s a bunch of hokey, mystical, touchy-feely stuff that I just can’t believe is real. I stopped believing in the Easter Bunny years ago lady.”
Okay, I feel you. It does sound pretty crazy to hear that someone has manifested their dreams into reality. Or to hear someone say that simply THINKING positively can change your outlook on life. It does seem a little Peter Pan-ish when someone first mentions the idea of positive thinking. I don’t know about you, but I don’t live in Neverland. The idea of just saying positive words to change my world seems a little out there.
“Don’t you mean they busted their tail to earn that promotion, close on their dream house or even lose all that weight?”
Well, they DID have to put in work, but it’s not always the blood, sweat and tears kind of work that we’ve been taught is vital to success. Have you ever created a vision board for your personal or professional goals? Have you ever journaled your goals for the week, month or year? If so, that’s part of the Law of Attraction and positive mindset. Not the whole concept, but it’s a snippet of how having a mindset of abundance can impact your life.
No vision board? What about New Year’s Resolutions? Those too can be part of the Law of Attraction if put into play just right.
So what IS the Law of Attraction exactly??
“According to www.lawofattraction.com “Simply put, the Law of Attraction is the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on. It is believed that regardless of age, nationality or religious belief, we are all susceptible to the laws which govern the Universe, including the Law of Attraction. It is the Law of Attraction which uses the power of the mind to translate whatever is in our thoughts and materialize them into reality. In basic terms, all thoughts turn into things eventually. If you focus on negative doom and gloom you will remain under that cloud. If you focus on positive thoughts and have goals that you aim to achieve you will find a way to achieve them with massive action.”
I’m a Mom. How Can It Work For Me?
I get it. I’m a busy mom of two myself. More often than not, I find myself looking at the clock and it’s 9 a.m. and I feel like it should already be dinner time. The kids are screaming. The dog has peed in the floor and there are umpteen piles of laundry that are calling my name.
How in the world am I going to use affirmations or the Law of Attraction to my advantage?
In those moments when my baby is nursing like a newborn and won’t let me put her down, I will inevitably NEED to be doing something else besides sitting in the rocker all morning. There’s dishes to wash, food to cook, a preschooler to entertain, etc.
We feel the pressure to check off all the little boxes on our mental “to do” list. We start getting stressed out because the day isn’t going as expected. We start to feel overwhelmed when we can’t figure out why our 3 year old is crying and then the baby joins in for a tag team effort
Those are the moments that affirmations are truly made for. According to the website Mind Tools, “Self-affirmation may also help to mitigate the effects of stress. In one study, a short affirmation exercise boosted the problem-solving abilities of “chronically stressed” subjects to the same level as those with low stress.”
Take a moment, close your eyes (if you can) and recite your affirmations either out loud or to yourself. When you start feeling those negative feelings, remember the affirmations and repeat it!
Now, at first you may not truly FEEL the truth of the affirmation. I didn’t. It took several repetitions to get my brain rewired to feel the validity of the statements. It’s hard to believe your a good mom if your in the middle of chaos, I get it. But, continue working at it and repeating them multiple times a day.
Here’s one you can try for the example above:
“If I do nothing today besides hug my kids, then I’ve done enough”
